Mary Parker Follett

Follett understood the human and local foundations of democracy are grounded in neighborhood deliberations and action.

She has been understood as a business theorist. I propose that she was a civil society theorist who was coopted by business and big government.

It is time to apply her wisdom and insights at the neighborhood level as she so clearly advocated. Businesses and governments have their own momentum and cadences. With their superfluous powers they are displacing civil society (killing it) with consumerist policies, products, and services. Follett understood this risk. She has been gone since 1933. Let's study her writings and apply them in neighborhoods through neighborhood centers via deliberative conversations and action.
